Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built as a rectory between 1853 and 1854 by H.E. Kendall, who lived from 1805 to 1885. It is designed in the Italianate style and constructed from gault brick, featuring slated hipped and gabled roofs. The building has two tall stacks and is two storeys high, with a symmetrical facade that includes central bays that project and rise to a gabled attic floor.
The eaves are deep and boarded, supported by paired modillions. There is a brick band that links the first-floor windows at impost height, along with rusticated brick banding on the ground floor and plinth. All windows are fitted with recessed hung sashes that do not have glazing bars, set within segmental or round-headed brick arches that feature stone key blocks and stone sills supported by console brackets.
On the ground floor, there are two large windows and two first-floor windows flanking the central two bays, which include a rectangular planned ground floor window and a first-floor balcony. Additionally, there are three grouped ground floor windows and smaller attic windows, with two first-floor windows similar to the side windows. The main entrance is located on the west side and features a large panelled glazed door beneath a round-headed brick canopy. Inside, there are contemporary details, including an open string staircase.
A watercolour in the church, possibly by Kendall, depicts an architectural composition of the rectory.
