Description
The cemetery chapels, built in 1879, are a pair of structures under a single roof located in Bassingbourn cum Kneesworth. They feature polychrome brickwork in red, blue, and gault, with some stone dressings and a 20th-century tile roof. The layout consists of two parallel chapels sharing a common porte cochere. Each chapel has an altar apse aligned with the entrance door in the porte cochere. Designed in a Gothic style, the chapels have lancet windows and are single storey. The front showcases triple gables, with the left and right gables having brick copes, while the central gable over the porte cochere is recessed, all topped with crosses. The outer gables feature triple lancets set within larger arches, along with a loop-hole above, and each side has a stepped buttress. Elaborate kneelers adorn the gables. The central gable includes an open archway to the carriageway, a roundel above, and a trefoil circular window in the gable. The rear of the chapels mirrors the front but lacks the coped gables and buttresses. Each side has a polygonal apse with three lancets and a pyramidal roof.
Inside the porte cochere, there are pairs of double doors on each side leading to the chapels. The porte cochere features a boarded roof with brattished collars and king-post trusses. The chapels themselves have boarded roofs supported by arched-braced trusses on corbels, along with altar tables and pews. A notable aspect of these well-preserved chapels is the fine polychrome brickwork found both inside and out.
