Description

No. 16 High Green is a cottage that likely dates back to the mid-17th century. It was subdivided in the 19th century and is now a single dwelling-house. Part of the roof at the rear has been raised, and an extension was added around 1980. The building is timber framed and roughcast rendered, featuring a steeply pitched plain tiled roof with end stacks. One stack, which has earlier brick at the base, is possibly original, while the other stack, located on the west side, dates from the 19th-century subdivision. The plan consists of two bays, with the west gable end facing the former Green. The cottage has two storeys and an attic, with two windows on either side of a 19th-century doorway that has a 20th-century door. The east gable end includes casement windows and a 19th-century doorway.

Inside, the framing consists of substantial scantling with downward bracing from the corner posts, and the ceilings are supported on clamps pegged to the studs. The studs run continuously from the sill to the wall plate, except at the gable ends and the partition wall, where the main posts are thickened to support the main beams of the ceiling. The joists are unmoulded and laid flat, and one room features a main beam that is stop-chamfered. The attic ceiling includes re-used timber.
