Description
The Great Shelford war memorial is a limestone cross approximately 7 meters high, located on a small green at the intersection of High Street and the A1301. The memorial features a tapered octagonal shaft that extends to form the upright of the cross-head, which is also octagonal in shape. The shaft is set upon a square plinth with heavily chamfered corners.
Inscribed on the front face of the plinth are the words: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-18. 1939-45. THEIR NAME LIVETH EVERMORE." The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on two sides of the plinth, while the names of the Second World War dead are on the rear. The plinth is supported by a two-stage octagonal base. Surrounding the memorial is a small grassed area defined by a stone kerb, which also outlines a narrow path at the back.
