Description

Chestnut Cottage, originally a house and now two dwellings, was built in the mid-17th century with later additions in the late 17th century. The house is timber framed and has been rendered, with a modern tile roof. It retains an original red brick ridge stack with grouped shafts set diagonally, and a later 17th-century stack to the north-east end. A 19th-century stack is located at the south-west end. The house has a lobby entry and a three-bay plan, extended axially to the north-east by one bay. It has two storeys and four first-floor windows. The lobby entry features an early 18th-century doorcase with a pulvinated frieze and door hood with a panelled soffit, leading to a six-panelled door. A late 17th-century extension replicates the timber framing, rendering, and tiling. The interior retains the original plan and partition walls, but features an inserted staircase resulting from the subdivision, and blocked inglenooks.
