Description

The Old Fox is a cottage that was formerly known as the Susan Plumb public house. It dates from the mid 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building is timber framed, rendered, and has a tiled roof, featuring old tiles on the rear pitch. It has a red brick ridge stack with two flues. Originally, the cottage had a three-bay and lobby entry plan, but it has been extended at the north end and at the rear, now forming an L-plan. The structure is one storey with an attic and includes three dormers. There are three enlarged window openings, all fitted with mid to late 20th-century casements. The doorway to the lobby is currently blocked. The extension at the north end was likely made in the late 18th century, coinciding with its conversion to a public house, and a stack was added at this end. A lean-to for a dairy and scullery was constructed on the east side during the same period. An early 19th-century rear wing was also added, built from flint and red brick, and is single storey with a tiled roof.

Inside, the hall features ovolo moulded and leaf-stopped ceiling joists and an inglenook hearth. The original staircase is located on the east side of the hearth, with a landing balustrade made of flat section twisted balusters. The parlour has a small abutting hearth with a shaped back wall, and its ceiling includes an ovolo moulded main beam along with some joists that have a similar moulding.
