Description
Four Mile House is a house mainly built around 1700, but it includes part of a 15th-century house in the rear wing. The property has undergone minor alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with plaster-rendered and pargetted panels, and has a steeply pitched roof covered with plain tiles, showcasing original moulded wood eaves. A cornice and a red brick ridge stack are located at the junction of the front and rear ranges. The house is arranged in an L-plan with two storeys.
The fenestration consists of three flush frame hung sashes with vertical glazing bars, dating from the mid-19th century. On the ground floor, there are three hung sashes, including two with sixteen panes. The doorway is off-centre and features an early 19th-century doorcase with a moulded architrave, flat hood, and a panelled door.
Inside, the rear range contains part of a 15th-century open hall that has been remodelled in the 17th century. Most of a tie beam with substantial arch bracing remains, and above it, the roof features sooted rafters on one side, which are now part of a typical 17th-century staggered butt purlin roof. The front range has three bays and a narrower stair and entry bay. Internal details, such as the staircase with a toads-back mahogany rail and square section balusters on the open-string, are from the early 19th century. The roof over this part of the house is also of a similar butt-purlin type.
Four Mile House was the home of G.G. Coulton, a medieval historian.
