Description
West Thatch is a cottage dating from around 1678, located on the northwest side of West Green in Barrington. The bay to the west has been enlarged at the rear in the 18th century. The structure is timber framed, with plaster rendering and a long straw thatch roof that is half-hipped. It features a square red brick ridge stack with two flues. The cottage has a three-bay and lobby entry plan, standing two storeys tall with an attic. There are three modern casement windows on both the first and ground floors, and the doorway is set within a modern porch.
At the west end, there is a lean-to timber frame enlargement with a raised roof. Inside, the cottage has abutting inglenook hearths, one of which is now blocked while the other has been rebuilt in brick but retains its original lintel, which has Hearth Tax receipts from approximately 1678 to 1682 affixed to it. The roof features side purlins and a narrower chimney bay, with jowled heads to the posts and downward bracing. In the late 17th century, the cottage was occupied by members of the Pryme family.
