Description

The Royal Oak Inn is a building dating from the mid-15th century that underwent renovation in the mid-20th century. It features an exposed timber frame with plastered infill and a long straw thatched roof that is hipped at the west end. There is a red brick ridge stack from the 17th century that has been repaired, which includes two diagonally set linked shafts. The eaves are coved over two recessed centre bays. The building has a plan that includes an open hall with a solar at the west end and a service end at the east. It is two storeys tall, with a jettied first floor at both the solar and service ends. Modern leaded light casements are present on both the first and ground floors. The original doorway to the cross-passage is located in the service end and features a four-centred arch with a square head and carved spandrels. The framing includes curved downward wall bracing and heavy scantling studs. The jetty joists are supported by shaped brackets. A plaster shield of arms is reset in the north wall of the hall in its original location. Inside, a chimney stack and floor were added to the hall in the 17th century, and the hearth has since been removed. The roof, which was not inspected, is of plain crown-post construction and is smoke blackened.
