Description

Bull Lane Cottage is a cottage located in West Wratting, with two main building periods: one dating from 1762, as indicated by a dated panel in the front wall, and the other from the mid-19th century. The cottage is timber framed, rendered, and constructed with brick, featuring thatch and pantile roofs. The original 1762 section was a three-bay lobby entry cottage, consisting of one storey and an attic, with one dormer and a ground floor hung sash window from the 19th century that has twenty panes, alongside an 18th-century three-leaded light casement. There is a boarded door leading to the lobby entry.

In the mid-19th century, alterations were made to the south-west end of the cottage, which was subdivided. The roof was raised, and a first floor and attic were added, creating a crosswing. This section has a pantiled roof and is now two storeys with an attic. It features a pointed arch to a lancet window in the attic and to two first-floor casements with Y-tracery and leaded lights. The ground floor retains hung sashes from the original cottage, and there are two doorways with boarded doors. The south-west end bay was originally a shop and bus shelter. The date 1762 and the initials I.E. are set in flints in a panel.

Inside, the cottage has abutting hearths from the 19th century, likely rebuilt using existing red brick. A partition wall from the 18th-century cottage was replaced with a red brick wall at the same time. The framing throughout is generally slender and typical of the 18th century.
