Description
Nos. 1 and 2 High Street is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the early 16th century, with elements from the early and late 17th century. A lead rainwater head on the building is dated 1695. The structure features a timber frame with plaster infill and red brick from the 17th century, laid in English bond, topped with a thatched roof.
The building is two storeys high with attics, and it has a slightly projecting earlier wing on the left side of the jettied hall range. The roof was re-covered and brick gables were added around 1695. It has a brick plinth, and the gables are similar in design, though the north gable has been altered by later construction. Each gable has eleven gabled steps and features projecting stacks with two offsets, along with pairs of ogee-headed recesses below diagonally set grouped shafts. At the base of these stacks are small carved brick horse heads, one of which still survives on the north gable stack.
The ground floor includes one two-light and two three-light transomed casement windows, with mullioned side lights on the centre window. The first floor has three three-light casement windows, also with similar mullioned side lights on the centre window. There are two late 17th-century dormer windows on the facade with casement lights. A square sundial plaque is located on the south gable wall. This building is an example of the stepped parapet gables found in the fen area of Cambridgeshire.
