Description
Oak Cottage is a house dating from the early 16th century, with reused timber frame elements from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The construction is timber frame with plaster infilling, with modern red brick additions. The roof is covered in plain tiles and is half-hipped. The building is two storeys and has a continuous jetty over two and a half bays, with a gable-end stack to the south. Around 1960, it was extended by a further bay. There are two side stacks and one ridge stack. A 20th-century entrance is on the right-hand side, with a boarded door and side windows; the lintel of the original entrance to the cross passage remains in situ, though now blocked. There are two ground-floor windows, one of five lights and one of six lights, with some original moulded mullions. Three first-floor casement windows, each with three lights, are also present. The interior features stop-chamfered ceiling beams and blocked service and chamber doors that divide the original ground floor and first-floor rooms. It retains 17th and 18th century panelling and the reused timber frame, which originated from The Angel Hostel at No. 22 Trinity Street, Cambridge, and a building on Scotland Road, Cambridge, both of which were demolished around 1961.
