Description
Nos. 76 and 78 High Street are two dwellings that were originally one building, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The structure is timber-framed with rough cast render and features a plain tiled roof. It has a rectangular ridge stack with grouped diagonal shafts. The building is two storeys high and originally had a two-unit lobby entry plan, which was converted into two separate dwellings in the 19th century. There are two 19th-century entrances: one with a four-panelled door and the other with a six-panelled door, both flanked by two shallow oriel bay windows. On the first floor, there are two three-light hung sash windows.
Inside, the timber frame is exposed, and there are some early 17th-century painted decorations on the plaster panels. Pargetted plaster motifs, possibly from an external wall, have been resited on a plaster panel. The interior also features 17th-century brick hearths with stop-chamfered mantel beams and a 17th-century panelled door. No. 78 is connected to No. 80 at both floor levels.
