Description
Moretons Charity Almshouses, dated 1853 on a stone panel on the front wall, are almshouses constructed from gault brick, featuring red brick door and window arches and a terracotta band. The building has an embattled hipped roof covered in fishscale pattern slate at the center, with lower flanking wings that have end parapets on kneelers. There is a moulded brick eaves cornice and five end and ridge stacks with projecting capping, string courses, and splayed offsets at the bases. The plan consists of a higher central block with flanking wings, and the structure is two storeys tall with a frieze of terracotta between the levels. The central block has a canted front and features alternating red and yellow bricks in pointed two-centred arches above two-light casements with Y glazing bars. A similar arch is present above a boarded door with cover strips. The wings have dripmoulds with return stops above three casements in square heads, with the center window being blind. On the ground floor, two similar windows flank two adjacent doorways. The left-hand wing has six window openings, including two blind windows.
