Description
The White House is a cottage dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the mid-17th century and a conversion in the 19th century that turned it into two cottages. It has recently been restored. The structure is timber framed and features roughcast render. The main roof is slated and has patterned ridge tiles, while the outshut has a plain tiled roof. The ridge stack has been rebuilt.
The cottage is two storeys high and consists of three equal timber framed bays that were originally open at both floor levels. In the mid-17th century, it was altered to create a three-unit lobby entry plan by adding a back-to-back hearth and partitions. There is evidence of windows at the first floor level and a staircase rising on the north side of the stack. On the south elevation, the main entrance has been blocked, and there are two three-light casement windows on the ground floor, along with three first floor windows, one of which has horizontal sliding sashes. The main entrance is located in the rear elevation.
Inside, the three equal timber framed bays have walls framed in two stages. The open trusses are arched braced to cambered tie beams with plain soffit chamfers, which are stop-chamfered. The cross beams have joists that are possibly replacements and are laid flat. There is an edge halved scarf joint to the north-east of the wall plate as a repair. The interior features two red brick hearths with chamfered mantel beams; the hearth in the hall has two niches with shaped heads, and the former baking oven has been infilled. The building is situated on the boundary of the churchyard and may have originally served as a church or guildhall before the 17th-century alterations.
