Description
The Former Engine House at Hutchings and Harding Ltd is an early 19th-century structure that originally served as an engine and boiler house for a brewery. It is built of brick and features a slate roof that is hipped at one end, with a cast iron water tank at the other end, positioned above a single bay engine house. The main building consists of three storeys and is arranged in a four-bay by three-bay layout, which is marked by blind arcading. The windows are randomly placed cast-iron fenestration. The engine house is tall and narrow, designed for a beam engine, and exhibits a similar style in its brickwork and fenestration. Currently, it is used as a workshop and store known as 'The Crust Warehouse'. This building reflects the earlier industrial use of the site and was repurposed by a tannery starting in the 1840s.
