Description

The Olde House is a house located on Station Road in Histon, dating from the early 16th and 17th centuries. It features a timber frame encased in local red brick laid in English bond, with some later brick repairs. The house has plain tile roofs and is two storeys high, forming an L-shape with a later 17th-century addition at the corner. The gables have parapets, with the left gable featuring a stack and two rebuilt diagonal shafts, as well as embattled decoration where the wall thickness is reduced, possibly indicating the height of the original timber frame. There is a large rear stack with three diagonal shafts.

On the main elevation, there is a sawtooth eaves cornice and a rebuilt plinth. The original openings have chamfered reveals with square-headed arches and drip moulds, but three first-floor and three ground-floor casement windows have been altered. The door, which has studded moulding and dates from the 17th century, has a similar door that has been resited inside.

Inside, the house features 16th-century floor frames in the rear wing and 17th-century frames in the front range. There are two large inglenook hearths and a first-floor hearth, with 17th-century panelling that has been resited for a 19th-century staircase in the cross-passage. The roof has side purlins with windbraces, and there is an ovolo-moulded mullion window in the northwest gable.
