Description

The Maltings is a house dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It is timber-framed, with part of the frame exposed but mainly covered in roughcast. The roof is covered with cement tiles and is hipped at the rear of the crosswing, which features a ridge stack from the late 17th century or early 18th century. The building has an open-hall plan with a parlour crosswing, and a floor and stack were added in the 17th century. The hall has one storey and an attic, with one dormer and one window on the front elevation. The crosswing consists of three bays and two storeys, also with an attic, and has a jettied first floor. The end facing the road has some applied framing and a boxed jetty beam on original brackets. There is a small casement window in the attic above a 20th-century oriel window. The side elevation shows original exposed framing at the first floor, with curved downward bracing. At the rear, there are additional buildings related to industry, including a two-bay barn with a pit. Next to the house is a late 17th-century red brick wall, featuring alternating courses of stretchers in Flemish bond, likely linked to the building campaign of Sir Thomas Wendy in 1673. Inside, there is evidence of the original open hall in the west range, including smoke blackening in the roof and a gablet that was once in the gable end. Windows can be inferred, including one with diamond mullions and two with shutter grooving.
