Description

Rectory Farmhouse is a mid-16th century farmhouse, with reused late 14th century roof timbers and later alterations dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. It was restored around 1970 and extended to the west. The farmhouse is timber-framed, now with 20th century rendering, and has red brick sections. The roofs are tiled, with a rebuilt ridge stack and an end stack to the right-hand side. The original plan was three units, with a winy at the west end. It has been extended by one timber-framed bay to the east, and includes a single-storey bakehouse and sunken dairy in a rear outshut. The south elevation features a 20th-century gabled cross wing to the west. The main range has a nine-panelled front door with side lights, and two three-light casement windows with glazing bars to the right. There are three similar, but smaller, first-floor casement windows. Inside, the exposed timber-frame retains traces of vermillion paint. Two original mullioned windows have rebates for shutters and evidence of former windows in each room. The floor frames were raised, possibly when two chimneys were inserted around 1800 or later. A baking oven has been partly restored. The roof contains smoke blackened rafters with mortices for collars and collar braces, and ashlar pieces, which are similar to those found in St. Nicolas Church.
