Description

The Knapp is a cottage dating from the mid- to late 17th century, with early 18th-century additions and a late 20th-century enlargement. It is timber-framed and rendered, originally thatched, but now roofed with pantiles and a half-hipped roof. The cottage features a ridge stack, with rebuilt upper courses, and an early 18th-century red brick end stack. Originally arranged with a lobby-entry plan, the front elevation has one dormer and three windows, all with mid-20th-century sash glazing. A 20th-century timber porch now provides the main entrance, although the original lobby entry doorway is located within a wing added in the late 20th century.

Inside, the timber framing is exposed, and the roof is a clasped side purlin roof with some inserted collars. One ground floor room may have originally been open to the roof and was floored in the 18th century when a red brick hearth and stack were built; the ceiling joists in this room are narrower as a result. The room also contains an inglenook hearth. The main beam to the centre room has stop-chamfered ends, but the timbers are generally of slender scantling. The building is of group value.
