Description
The Over War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and has a square plan.
The memorial is situated on a late 20th-century concrete sub-base within a late 20th-century paved area at the junction of Glower Street and The Lanes. It features a three-step base, a tapering plinth, and a tall shaft that narrows in rectangular section, topped with a Celtic wheel-head cross adorned with interlace ornament. The east face of the pedestal bears the First World War dedication, which reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF OVER WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918," along with the names of the fallen inscribed below. The inscription "1939 - 1945" is located at the bottom of the plinth, with the names of the deceased from the Second World War inscribed on the top step of the base.
The late 20th-century concrete sub-base and surrounding paved area are not considered of special interest and are excluded from the listing.
