Description

The Hardwicke Arms Hotel is a hotel with two main building phases from the 18th century. Some work was carried out by Sir John Soane between 1791 and 1794. The structure features red brick and some burnt brick in Flemish bond, with timber framing and part of the rear wall rendered in plaster. It has a plain tiled roof that is hipped at the south end, with plaster coved eaves and an internal stack off the ridge. The hotel is two storeys high with an attic, and includes three hipped dormers. On the first floor, there are five twelve-pane 19th-century hung sashes with glazing bars, set under clear red gauged brick flat arches. A similar design is found on three ground floor hung sashes and the doorway, with a brick band between the storeys. Later in the century, the hotel was extended to the north, maintaining the red brick and plain tiled roof style. This extension is also two storeys high with an attic and features one gable dormer, along with a three-window range of twelve-pane hung sashes with clear red brick flat arches and surrounds. Additional domestic extensions and outbuildings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries are located at the north end, constructed of red and gault brick with plain tiled roofs. The interior has been modernised but retains a staircase similar to those found at Nos 113 and 115 Ermine Way, featuring a newel post with a moulded top and cross brace balusters.
