Description
Wiles Cottage is a cottage that dates from the late 17th century and early 19th century. It is constructed from local brick and 19th century gault brick, with the rear wall partly painted. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has one storey and an attic, which has been extended by one bay to the east. The west gable features a tumbled brick parapet and an end stack, while there is a 17th century ridge stack and a 19th century gault brick gable and stack to the east. A chequered brick band is present at the attic floor in the gable, which is painted on the main facade and arches over segmental openings. The cottage has four half-glazed casement dormer windows, a flush-panelled 19th century door, and a boarded door. There are two hung sash windows; one on the right side is an early 19th century window with thick glazing bars, and there is a later 19th century bay window on the left side. A stone plaque in the gable is inscribed 'Wiles Cottage'. Inside, there is a large sealed inglenook hearth in the central room, along with ovolo-moulded and stop-chamfered cross-beams. This cottage was formerly the coachman's house to The Rookery.
