Description

A barn, cowhouse, and granary, dating from the late 15th century with alterations in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is located to the north-west of the farmhouse at Lane Farm. The building is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a corrugated roof. It has three bays and a two-bay granary. The interior features a close-studded frame with jowled posts supporting cambered tie beams and cranked braces. Evidence remains of a former first-floor chamber, with evidence for windows featuring diamond mullions—four lights to the west and five lights to the south. In the late 18th or early 19th century, the original first-floor structure was removed, the south end was truncated, and the roof rebuilt. Significant portions of the original 15th-century trusses survive, along with sections of wall framing consisting of close studding with a mid-rail at first-floor level, notably complete in at least three bays, incorporating a trimmer for an original door. The rest of the framing uses 18th-century close studding interspersed with long tension braces. Some timber is reused from earlier 15th-century fabric. The south end was infilled with a wall post, girding beams, brick, and plaster panels. Although the roof was rebuilt, some original rafters, including at least one principal rafter, remain. The lower walls are boarded. The north wall is weatherboarded internally, with a sliding shutter leading to a one-bay open space probably used as a loose box. Beyond this is a two-bay granary with original grain bins on the first floor. Notably, the barn may have originally been used for wool storage and marketing. It forms a group with the adjacent farmhouse.
