Description

The Parish Church of St Helen is located on Colne Drury Lane and was completed in 1900, replacing the original church that collapsed in 1896. Designed by the architect Fawcett of Cambridge, the building retains some features from the earlier structure, including re-used ashlar.

The church features a tower positioned at the junction of the nave and south aisle, which consists of three stages and is supported by two-stage angle buttresses. It has a moulded plinth band and an embattled parapet adorned with crocketed pinnacles at each corner. The small spire is covered in lead and topped with an iron finial. The belfry window has two cinquefoil lights with a label and stops, while the main entry on the west face of the tower is a two-centred arch. The roofs of the nave, chancel, and south aisle are covered with red, ridged pantiles.

The south aisle has three bays, each with single-stage buttresses and three restored windows featuring two trefoiled lights in the style of the 14th century. An early 14th-century window with two pointed lights is located in the chancel wall. Inside, the nave boasts a 14th-century arcade of three bays, with two-centred arches formed of two chamfered orders, supported by octagonal columns with moulded capitals and bases. The roof is a modern crown-post design. There are early 14th-century piscinae in both the chancel and south aisle, and a 14th-century font with a plain octagonal bowl.
