Description

York House, built in 1844, features a double pile plan with two projecting wings and a central rear kitchen window. This two-storey building is constructed of gault brick and has shallow pitched modern tile roofs that are half-hipped at the wings. Stone steps lead up to a central porch that spans the facade between the wings, which has a tented roof and a cast iron trellis adorned with a Greek anthemion motif. The porch includes a recessed, four-panelled door with sidelights, and the doorcase has panelled reveals, panelled pilasters, and a moulded frieze. Above the door, there is a segmental arched fanlight with glazing bars set in a gauged brick arch. The first floor features a symmetrical arrangement of three hung sash windows with glazing bars and margin lights in cambered gauged brick arches. Each wing has two ground floor French casement windows with glazing bars and margin lights. Additionally, there is a cast-iron trellised porch leading to a garden door in the left wing, and a garden wall with terminating brick piers topped with stone caps and ball finials. Inside, the property remains intact, showcasing original four-panelled doors and chimney pieces. A fine, free-standing open-string staircase with mahogany handrails and cast-iron balusters is present, along with some original 19th-century wallpaper in the garden lobby of the south wing.
