Description
The Chestnuts is a Grade II* listed building located on the east side of High Street in Needingworth, dated 1710. Originally a farmhouse, it features a slightly later cross-wing on the left and a similar rear extension on the right. The building is two stories high with attics, constructed of local red brick, accented with a yellow brick chequered band between the floors of the main range. It has plain tile hipped roofs and a moulded eaves cornice with modillions on the cross-wing. There are two side stacks and a central ridge stack.
The roof includes four flat-roofed dormers with horizontal sliding sash windows that have glazing bars. On the first floor, there are three hung sash windows with glazing bars, and two similar windows in segmental arches at the ground floor, which flank a central six-panelled door. The doorcase features panelled pilasters with scroll brackets that support the cornice of a triangular pediment. The cross-wing has two recessed hung sash windows at both floor levels, set in gauged brick arches with key blocks, and a gauged brick band between the floors.
Inside, there is a very fine closed string staircase with turned balusters, designed symmetrically with the first flight free-standing. The interior also retains original raised and fielded six-panelled doors, chimney pieces, and raised and fielded oak panelling to dado height in the room to the left of the staircase.
