Description

Monks Hardwick House is located about 1 mile east of Prior Hill Park on a moated site. The building features two ranges that form a T-plan, which are remnants of a larger house likely built around 1600 by Sir Edmund Anderson, who was the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. To the south of the original structure is a block added around 1830. The 1600 house is timber framed, with the east and west gable ends rebuilt in late 17th century red brick laid in English bond. In the early 19th century, the walls were cased in gault brick, and the northern range was shortened with its gable end rebuilt in modern times. The roofs are covered with plain and modern tiles, and there are two gable end stacks, although the ridge stack has been removed. The house is two storeys high, with later fenestration on the gable ends. The 1830 block has a double pile plan, constructed of gault brick with a low-pitched hipped slate roof. It is also two storeys tall and features a range of five recessed hung sashes with glazing bars, along with a stone portico in the Roman Doric style with a pediment.

Inside, the east-west crosswing of the 1600 house has three bays, with a sealed inglenook in the centre bay and a hearth in the room above on the first floor. The ground floor room in the parlour wing to the north has double cyma moulding on the middle rails and main beam. The original cantilevered staircase leading to the 1830 block has an open string and square section balusters.
