Description

Wansford Railway Tunnel is a railway tunnel located approximately 500 metres west of Wansford Station. It was completed in June 1845 for the London and North Western Railway's Northampton to Peterborough line, built by Jones of Sheffield. The tunnel features coursed rock-faced limestone with freestone dressings on the embankment walls and is lined with brick. The west portal has Romanesque details, including a round arch with two roll-moulded and chamfered orders that spring from attached columns with cushion capitals. It accommodates a single track line and has a pedestrian sidewalk on the south side. The construction of the tunnel took seventeen months and involved 1,000 navvies who were camped in a disused quarry in the parish of Elton.
