Description
Four rows of tombstones are located in the eastern angle of the south porch and aisle of the parish church of St John the Baptist. These tombstones date from the 18th century and early 19th century, showcasing a significant number of well-crafted 18th-century tombstones and limestone slabs. The rows are identified as A-D from west to east.
Row A includes: a) A tombstone dated 1818 for Robt Boyall, featuring a segmental head with an oval plaque, ribband, and laurel leaf garland, with the inscription painted black; b) A shaped head with a raised plaque, though the inscription is unclear; c) A plain slab dated 1858 for Mary Boyall, with a deep incised inscription; d) A similar slab dated 1865 for John Boyall.
Row B features: a) A tombstone dated 1799 with a segmental head and recessed oval plaque, decorated with putti and garlands, but the black painted inscription is unclear; b) A classical composition dated 1720 with Ionic columns and winged putti, inscription unclear; c) A segmental head dated 1709 with putti and garlands; d) A segmental head dated 18-- for Wm Allen, with an oval plaque and black painted inscription.
