Description
Church Farmhouse is a very fine mid-17th century double-pile farmhouse constructed of local soft red brick. It features hipped slate roofs with two symmetrical plain brick chimney stacks. The building has two storeys with attics, and each facade consists of three bays that are similar in design but differ in detail. The farmhouse has a high brick plinth, a moulded brick band between the floors, and an eaves cornice adorned with saw-tooth and dentil brick bands. Brick pilasters are present at the quoins and on either side of the central doorway in the north and south facades.
The north facade includes five replacement early 19th century hung sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded wooden frames at both floor levels. The main entrance features a flat canopy and a rectangular fanlight above a six-panelled door.
Inside, the two north-facing rooms each have original moulded stone chimney pieces with shallow four-centred arches, similar to those in two rooms on the first floor. The eastern room has 18th century raised and fielded panelling, complete with a doorway leading to a panelled entrance lobby, while the western room has introduced pine panelling. A centrally positioned dog-leg staircase boasts chamfered newel posts with shaped finials, flat-moulded balusters, and a moulded handrail. The entrance to the staircase is through a round-headed arch supported by scroll brackets, with a central shaped drop finial that is repeated in a double arch at the first floor level. All rooms feature stop-chamfered beams, and the kitchen includes fine cross-beams and ceiling-joists along with a large cooking hearth. The internal partitions are timber-framed.
