Description

The Parish Church of St. Nicholas is a 13th-century church featuring a 14th-century timber-framed tower, which is a unique survival in the county. The church underwent restoration in the late 19th century when it was in a ruinous state. It is constructed from pebble-rubble with some stone, and has limestone and clunch dressings. The roof is plain tiled, while the tower is clad in shingles.

The nave and chancel are open to each other without internal divisions, and the east and south walls were rebuilt in the 15th century. There is one 13th-century lancet window in the north wall. The south and west doorways have stop-moulded jambs and four-centred arches. The nave and chancel roof, dating from the 15th century, consists of four bays with queen posts, featuring one original carved tie beam, an original deeply moulded cornice, and an embattled wall plate with side purlins.

The timber-framed west tower includes a bell stage and remains largely undisturbed, except for the first stage, which was modified in the 19th century with new sills and external buttresses, and the gable roof was replaced with a pyramid roof. The original weatherboarding was also replaced with shingles. The south porch is from the 19th century, while the church contains early 16th-century poppy-head pews and a chancel screen that have been restored. The font is from the 13th century and has an octagonal bowl, and there is a late 13th-century piscina.
