Description
Stow Cottage is an 18th century or earlier cottage with 19th century additions, located on Spaldwick Road in Stow Longa. The building features a two-unit plan with a lobby entry and exposed timber framing. It has a thatched roof with a ridge stack and is one storey high with attics, including two dormers. On either side of the doorway, which is sheltered by a modern thatched porch, are two casement windows. To the west, there is a 19th century brick wing with a slate roof and two storeys, featuring a horizontal sliding sash window on the first floor. There is also a 19th century stable range to the north, constructed of brick and pantiles.
Inside, the cottage has long, straight bracing in the slender timber framing. One ground floor room contains a large inglenook fireplace with an original timber-framed stack, along with a later fireplace that has a red brick stack. The interior also features 18th century panelled doors and cupboards, including an early 17th century panel with guilloche moulding, likely from a chest or fireplace overmantel.
