Description

The Somersham War Memorial is a Second World War memorial that was erected in 1957. It is made of pale grey granite and takes the form of a tall rectangular slab with shouldered corners. The front of the memorial features the sword of sacrifice in gold against a green circular wreath. Below this, there is an inscription that reads ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE 1939-1945’, followed by the names of the thirteen individuals who fell during the war. The slab is supported by a rectangular plinth that is inscribed with the words ‘AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’. This plinth sits on a shallow base, which is located in a gravelled square area surrounded by a kerb.
