Description

The Anchor is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Street in Hemingford Grey. This mid to late 16th century structure consists of two cottages that are timber-framed and covered in rough-cast render. It features a half-hipped thatched roof with two levels and a gault brick ridge stack that has two flues. There is also an external gault brick stack at the rear right side of the building. The Anchor is one storey with attics and has a lobby entry plan.

The building includes two gable dormers with horizontal sliding sashes that have glazing bars, and there are three similar sash windows on the ground floor, two of which are fitted with 19th century panelled shutters. A 19th century plank door and a casement window with glazing bars are located in a shaped, moulded architrave to the left side. Additionally, there is a 19th century wood bracket for an inn sign.

Inside, the Anchor features an open hall with a floored end bay and two floored bays on the right side. The left hand bays have long, straight downward bracing to the posts. There is a pair of 19th century settles, which have been shortened, flanking the hearth. The interior of the building is depicted in Dendy Sadler's works "The Squire's Song" and "The Popular Candidate."
