Description
Nos 110 to 118 on High Street are alms houses dated 1839, marked by a stone plaque featuring the crest of the Fellowes family. The building has a symmetrical plan with a two-storey central block that includes a projecting central bay, flanked by two single-storey wings on the east and west sides. The structure is made from reused abbey stone, with limestone dressings around the window and door architraves, copings on the gables, and pseudo buttresses. The roofs are covered with plain tiles.
The main two-storey range features kneed parapet gables and end stacks with diagonal brick shafts, along with two symmetrical ridge stacks. The central gabled bay showcases a six-light mullioned and transomed casement window above a moulded string that holds the inset date plaque. Flanking this bay are four pseudo buttresses that support a central three-light mullioned window and two panelled doors, each with four-centred arches. The arrangement of mullioned casement windows is symmetrical, with closed gabled porches on either side of the central bay.
The single-storey wings are identical, featuring kneed parapet gables with stone finials, three-light mullioned windows, and side entrances with panelled doors in four-centred arches. Together with the school, abbey gatehouse, and church, these alms houses form one of the finest groups of buildings around the Abbey Green in the country.
