Description
Nos. 16 and 20 Broadway, formerly known as the Globe Inn, were built in 1732 and refronted around 1840, with a 19th-century addition at the rear. The buildings are three storeys high, featuring a cemented front with rustication on the ground floor. There is a band below the first floor windows and an entablature at the top of the wall. The façade includes six windows with moulded architraves that have brackets and cornices on the first floor.
The entrance porch has fluted composite columns, an eight-panelled door, and a fanlight. There is a second doorway with an architrave and fanlight. No. 16 has a 19th-century doorway in the passage with a patterned fanlight, while No. 20 boasts a fine 18th-century doorway in the passage, featuring a wooden doorcase with Doric pilasters that support an entablature with a decorated frieze, a patterned fanlight, and a panelled door. Both Nos. 16 and 20 contain notable interior features.
Nos. 18A and 20B form a group with the rear of Nos. 16 and 20 in the courtyard of the former Globe Inn. Additionally, Nos. 2 to 6 (even), Nos. 12, 14, 16, and Nos. 20 to 32 (even) are part of a group with Nos. 1 to 17 (odd) and Nos. 21 and 23 Crown Street.
