Description

The Limes is a house dating from the late 16th century, with a one-bay extension added at the rear in the 18th century, and a further addition from the 19th century at the re-entrant angle. The building is timber-framed, with parts that are plaster rendered and brick cased. The north end wall from the 18th century is made of coursed limestone on a plinth, with brick used for the gable. The roof is plain tiled and hipped at the angle between the front and rear sections. There is a ridge stack of red brick located between the original house and the 18th-century addition, along with a chimney stack at the north end. The original house is in an L-plan and has two storeys, with the first floor jetty extending to the front. Some of the first floor framing is exposed, featuring shaped wall bracing and modern casing on the jetty beam. The first floor windows are hung sashes. The original doorway has a moulded architrave and a four-centred Tudor arch with a square head, adorned with foliate carving in the spandrels. The rear wing, which is also two storeys, dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and includes a two-storey canted bay on the south wall. The west end bay was added in the 18th century, along with the insertion of the chimney stack. The west end wall is made of brick, and the north end wall of the main range was rebuilt in the 18th century when the chimney stack was added. Inside, the front range features broad stop-chamfered ceiling main beams. Each of the ranges is structurally composed of two bays, with tie beams that have jowled heads but lack bracing.
