Description
The gateway, located approximately 150 yards north of Ramsey Abbey within the grounds of Ramsey Abbey School, is a mid-19th century structure, likely designed by Edward Blore around 1839. It features English bond gault brick with plain stone coping and an ashlar gateway. The rectangular plan walled kitchen garden includes two gateways on the south side. The main gateway is made of ashlar and has an elliptical arch with a keystone and imposts, flanked by tapered rusticated pilasters on pedestals. These support an entablature with a panelled frieze, paired brackets, a cornice, and a blocking course topped by a shaped pediment and small flanking obelisks, all designed in a Jacobethan style. The iron gate has spearheads on the mid and top rails. The second gateway features a brick arch with stone imposts and a decorated iron gate.
