Description

The Manor House, dated around 1150, is a significant building located on the south side of High Street in Hemingford Grey. Originally designed as a first-floor hall, it has undergone alterations in the 16th and 18th centuries. The structure is two stories high with attics, featuring rubble walls and Barnack stone dressings, topped with a plain tile roof and a ridge stack made of handmade bricks. A brick section on the north gable wall is a remnant of the 18th-century house that was demolished after a fire.

The south gable end at the first-floor level showcases an original two round-headed light window with a common chamfered sill and a round-headed label adorned with chevron ornament and pellets, each head featuring three projecting lobes. Similar original windows have been uncovered in the west and east walls near the south wall. A modern first-floor corner entrance and external staircase are positioned in their original location.

Inside, there is an original fireplace in the center of the east wall, which has jambs with detached shafts, moulded bases, and scalloped capitals. The arch has been recently replaced, retaining most of the original stones. The 16th-century alterations include chamfered ceiling beams and a large central chimney stack with hearths on both floor levels. The current owner of the Manor House is the writer Miss Lucy Boston.
