Description
Abbots End is a late 17th-century, two-storey house located on the High Street in Hemingford Abbots. The house is primarily constructed of red brick, with most of the exterior colour-washed. The roof was raised in the 18th century and is covered with old plain tiles. Red brick gable end and ridge stacks are present, topped with modern cappings. A band that separated the floors has been removed. The upper floor has three modern casement windows with segmental arched heads. The ground floor has two smaller casement windows flanking a central four-panelled door, which is set within an early 19th-century doorcase featuring moulded pilasters and corner bosses; the door itself has two glazed panels. A stair turret is located at the rear of the property.
Inside, a left-hand ground floor room exhibits bolection moulded panelling. The staircase has a flat section and shaped balusters. A lower, two-storey range extends to the west and showcases a fine, mid-16th century moulded axial beam, suggesting it may be part of an earlier building that previously occupied the site.
