Description

The Old Rectory is a house dating from around 1840, located on the north side of St Ives Road in Houghton. The building is constructed of gault brick and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with bracket modillions at the eaves. It is two storeys high and has two internal stacks capped with similar brackets. The front has a three-window range of hung sashes with glazing bars, set beneath flat stone arches. Flanking the central flat-roofed porch, which has a cornice with similar brackets, are two ground-floor windows with stone architraves. The entrance features a semi-circular headed moulded stone arch and glazed openings on the sides, with a stone band at impost height. The door has six raised and fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight.

To the right of the main house, there are two-storey service and stable ranges that form two sides of a walled courtyard. These ranges are also built of gault brick and have a low-pitched slate roof with gable ends and a dentil eaves cornice. An internal stack features a saw-tooth cornice, and there is a band between the storeys. The first floor has five hung sashes with glazing bars set in cambered arches, and there is a three-light opening with semi-circular headed stone arches leading to the hayloft. The courtyard wall is made of similar brick and includes blind panels, with stone coping on brick piers at the entry.
