Description

This building is a cottage located at 1 Finkle Lane, dating from the early 17th century with alterations made in the mid to late 17th century. It was extended around 1984. The structure is timber framed and rendered, sitting on a rubblestone plinth, and features a thatched roof made of combed wheat reed, which is half hipped at one end. There is a framed end stack that was inserted in the mid to late 17th century, with a rubblestone outer wall. The cottage consists of one bay and is situated at the rear of Nos. 13 and 15 Low Cross, separated by a narrow passage. There is evidence suggesting that the cottage may have originally extended further to the west. It has one storey and an attic, with two dormers. The windows and doorway, consisting of two casements and one entrance, were all added in 1984. Inside, the timber framing is mostly intact, featuring upward braces to the tie beams and exposed framing around the chimney. The main ceiling beams are tusk-tenoned to the studs. The roof is constructed with clasped side purlins and substantial rafters. The original purpose of the cottage is unclear, but its lack of heating suggests it may have been used as a barn or store before being converted into a detached kitchen when the stack was added.
