Description

TL 2697 WHITTLESEY FINKLE LANE (North Side)

19/83 No. 1

GV II

Cottage. Early C17 with mid-late C17 alterations. Extended c1984. Timber framed, rendered, on rubblestone plinth with thatched roof of combed wheat reed, half hipped to end. Framed end stack, inserted mid-late C17 with rubblestone outer wall. The cottage is of one bay only and lies at the rear of Nos. 13, 15 Low Cross from which it was divided by a narrow passage. Evidence has been found to suggest that the cottage possibly extended further to the West. One storey and attic. Two dormers. The fenestration of two casements and one doorway are all 1984. Inside: the framing is, in the main, intact. There are upward braces to the tie beams and the framing of the chimney is exposed. The ceiling main beams are tusk-tenoned to the studs. The roof is of clasped side purl in construction with rafters of substantial scantling. The original use of the cottage is uncertain but the fact that it seems to have been unheated may indicate a barn or store, converted to a detached kitchen when the stack was inserted.
