Description

3, 4 and 5 Nene Quay are three buildings that may date back to the late 16th century, originally serving as shops or granaries. They were originally timber-framed and jettied over the street, with No. 5 featuring a boxed jetty. The rear wing of No. 3 was added in the late 17th century and is contemporary with a brick wall on the south gable that likely replaced one bay of the original structure. The buildings have rendered walls and steeply pitched roofs made of slate and pantiles, typical of the 17th century, with side purlins. There is one ridge stack located to the left of the center. The buildings are two storeys tall with attics, featuring two side passageways and three shop entrances that now have modern shop windows. No. 5 has two first-floor hung sash windows, while Nos. 3 and 4 have three four-light transomed casement windows. No. 3 has been subdivided into four flats labeled A, B, C, and D, and includes one small attic window. These buildings are noted for their historic interest, with photographs and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries available at the Wisbech and Fenland Museum. Historical references include Watson from 1827, Walker and Craddock from 1847, and Gardiner from 1898.
