Description
This is a house built around 1795, with alterations and additions from the 19th century and later rear extensions. It is constructed of local brown brick, topped with a hipped slate roof featuring deep, boarded eaves and decorative brackets. The house is three stories high, with a basement, and the main entrance is located at the rear. It has four bays, with recessed six-paned, hung sash windows on the second floor, set within cambered, gauged brick arches. Similar twelve-paned windows are present on the first and ground floors. A stone band runs along the first floor, and there is a stone dressed plinth at the base. Original wrought iron spearhead front railings are present. A 19th-century brick wall extends to the southwest, incorporating brick piers and stone ball finials. The cellars predate the house itself, and may have been part of a riverside wharf. The building was formerly ‘The Conquering Hero’ public house in 1856. Photographs and prints, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, are held at the Wisbech & F. Museum.
