Description
Nos. 1 and 3 on Briggate West are two cottages dated 1770. They are constructed of callow brick in English bond, with part of the structure rendered and possibly some rubblestone on the rear wall. The cottages feature a steeply pitched buff, triple roll pantile roof, which may have been raised, and have tumbled end parapets on kneelers. A dentil eaves cornice runs along the roofline. The buildings are one storey with an attic and include three 19th-century gable dormers. Above the original segmental arches of three window openings, there is a dentil brick band, with later casements and two doorways. No. 1 retains its original door, which has six raised and fielded panels. A stone panel on the front wall, now painted, displays the initials RWH and the date 1770. Inside, one room features original panelling on the fireplace wall and a newel staircase beside the hearth. The ceiling joists are similar to those found in Nos. 2 and 4 Briggate East, and there is vertical panelling in the hall.
