Description

This late 17th-century house and shop appears to have been built in two phases, with later alterations. It is constructed of local brown brick, featuring a steeply pitched slate roof, hipped to the west with a shallow parapet gable and an end stack to the east, and a rear stack. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a cellar below. The upper floor has two flush-framed, twelve-paned sash windows set within segmental arches. A similar window in a cambered arch sits to the west of a six-panelled house door, which is framed by an enriched open pedimented wooden doorcase. The shop to the west has two shop windows flanking a half-glazed, panelled double door with a slender pilastered architrave. A decorative band runs between the floors, and there is a plinth at the base of the house on the right-hand side. Original 17th-century features include chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a two-panelled door, a casement window with an ovolo mullion, a mantel beam to a hearth, and the original cellar. Photographs and prints from the 18th and 19th centuries are held at the Wisbech & FDC Museum.
