Description
Town Bridge, also known as Wisbech Bridge, is a river bridge built in 1931 by RSW Perkins, the County Surveyor of the Isle of Ely, and Messrs. L Mouchell of London. It is constructed of reinforced concrete using the Hennibique system and is designed in a Neo-classical style. The bridge features a single flat span with a moulded frieze and cornice, topped with a balustrade that has unusual cube balusters. The sides of the bridge curve outward at the abutments, and each corner has a pedestal with an obelisk topped with a metal lantern. The balustrade extends along the southwest side, along South Brink, for 10 metres. When it was built, this bridge was the longest portal type flat span concrete bridge in the country, with a span of 92 feet 6 inches. It is part of a distinguished group of listed buildings along both sides of the River Nene.
