Description

Tower Hospital is a disused hospital that was originally built as a workhouse between 1837 and 1838 by architect WJ Donthom. The building is constructed from gault brick in Flemish bond, with limestone dressings. The roofs, which feature parapeted gable ends, have recently been re-clad in artificial slates, while the west wing and cross-wing are clad in asbestos sheets. The structure includes brick gable ends and lateral stacks.

The plan of the building is E-shaped, featuring a large tower above the central entrance wing and a central rear wing. It is designed in the Tudor style. The exterior consists of low two-storey ranges that connect three-storey wings, with a 1:5:3:5:1 bay arrangement on the east front. The gabled projecting wings on either side rise to three storeys. The central tower is notable for its embattled octagonal turrets at the corners, which have tall narrow windows. A prominent feature at the front is a very large full-height mullion transom window that occupies the entire space between the turrets, complete with a doorway at the base and a gable at the top that includes a clock and a bellcote. On the south side, there are large mullion transom windows between the turrets. The side elevations of the north and south wings have central projecting gabled bays with chamfered stone mullion transom windows.

The central block behind the tower has splayed gabled corners with four-centred arch doorways, and a long rear wing with a cross-wing at the end. The ranges to the west have been altered or demolished. Inside, there is a stone dog-leg staircase in the central block, featuring a simple wooden balustrade with square newels and stick balusters. The hospital was designed to accommodate 340 inmates.
