Description

This is a circa 1700 cottage, forming part of a pair and located in Ely. The building is constructed of brick, now rendered, and has a tiled roof. It has a roughly L-shaped plan and consists of one and a half storeys, meaning a single storey with an attic above. The front elevation has a centrally positioned door opening with an early 19th century wooden gothic surround, flanked by two window openings to the left and one to the right. A chimney stack rises above the door opening, and there are dormer windows positioned immediately above each of the three ground floor windows. A parapet defines the west gable. A later gabled wing extends northwards to the rear, incorporating modern lean-to extensions which are not of particular interest. Windows and doors are modern replacements.

Inside the original cottage, the ground floor features a lobby entrance plan with 18th century two-panel cupboard doors. There’s 19th century moulding to one door surround and evidence of a brick floor. The stairs at the rear of the fireplace likely date from the late 18th or early 19th century and may represent a later reconfiguration of an earlier staircase. The roof structure comprises a simple coupled rafter design, largely intact, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. A ridge piece underneath the rafters may be a later addition to strengthen the roof.

The building retains its original lobby entrance plan and much original fabric and dates from circa 1700. It forms part of a pair with number 4, which is already listed.
